Read and use a semantic map

The semantic map helps you find related sources and notes in the current project. Use it to locate material, then select an item to open it. Chats do not appear on the map.

Open the map

Select the mini map in the sidebar. You can also open the command palette and choose Semantic Map.

Read the layout

Atlas positions items using the meaning of their stored text. Items that appear near each other have similar content. Labels name broader clusters.

Each item's color shows its type, such as PDF, website, video, or note. The legend in the lower-right corner lists the colors and how many items have each one. Select a legend row to hide or show that color. A hollow dot means the color is hidden.

Distance is not a citation, strength score, or claim of cause and effect. Open the items when you need to understand why they appear together.

Search the map

Select Search in the composer at the bottom of the map.
Type a word or phrase. Atlas narrows the map after you pause, or at once when you press Enter.
Select a matching item to open it.

Press Escape or clear the field to restore the full map.

Classify the map

Use Classify to color the map by categories you describe, such as papers that use surveys vs. experiments.

Select Classify in the composer at the bottom of the map.
Describe how to group the items. Atlas sorts them after you pause, or at once when you press Enter.
Wait for the colors to update. Items stay in place and only their colors change.
Use the legend to hide or show a category, and open items in the categories you care about.

Items that Atlas could not place are counted at the bottom of the legend. Press Escape or clear the field to return to type colors. Atlas remembers your last classification for each project.

Move around the map

Drag to pan.
Use the mouse wheel or pinch to zoom.
Right-drag, or hold Shift while dragging, to orbit.
Use the arrow keys to pan and Shift with an arrow key to orbit.
Press + or - to zoom.
Press Home or 0 to fit the map.
Select Play or Pause, to the left of the composer field, to start or stop automatic camera movement.
