  3. Screen: separate included, excluded, and maybe sources, with a short reason for each exclusion.
  4. Extract: capture the claim, method, finding, limitation, useful passage, or gap from each source.

For a scoping or systematic review, the same stages become more formal. You may need fixed inclusion rules, a clear search record, screening notes, and reporting standards such as PRISMA. Describe the work as a systematic review only when the method meets that level of rigor.

The output of this stage is a short work plan. It names the question, search path, screening rule, extraction fields, theme target, draft outline, and check pass.

Define the question and scope

Start by narrowing the review question before opening more tabs. A question such as "AI in education" is too broad to screen or synthesize. A better question names who is studied, the setting, method, result, theory, or time period.

Set these scope rules before searching:

  • The discipline or field you are reviewing.
  • The kinds of sources that count, such as peer-reviewed studies, books, policy reports, or methods papers.
  • The date range and language boundaries.
  • The concepts or methods that must appear for a source to be relevant.

Search, screen, and organize sources

The strongest synthesis parts name a pattern first. Then they show which sources support or complicate it. A weak draft says "Smith found X, Jones found Y, and Lee found Z." A stronger draft says "Several sources treat X as a measurement problem, but later studies argue that the underlying issue is sampling."

Write, cite, and verify claims

Use the synthesis rows to decide the draft order. The headings should reflect themes, methods, debates, time, or theory camps. If every heading is a source name, the review is probably still an annotated bibliography.

Read the first sentence of each planned part. It should state a link among sources, such as a shared method, a conflict, a change over time, or a gap. The cited papers then support that link. If the sentence only names one paper, revise the plan before polishing the prose. A paper-by-paper structure makes it harder to build and support a claim across sources.

Before finishing, audit the claims:

  • Open the source passage behind each important claim.
  • Check whether the passage directly supports the sentence.
  • Watch for context that qualifies or reverses the claim.
