Billing and subscriptions

Atlas uses the billing portal for subscription and payment changes. Use the in-product account flow so the portal opens for the correct Atlas account.

What this page covers

Purchase, manage, or cancel a subscription. Find invoices, request refunds, and resolve provider synchronization problems.

Open billing settings

  1. Sign in to the Atlas account that owns the subscription.
  2. Open account settings.
  3. Choose the billing or subscription option.
  4. Continue to the billing portal.
  5. Complete the change there, then return to Atlas.

If you are part of more than one account or workspace, confirm the account email before changing anything. Billing changes only apply to the subscription attached to that account.

Common billing tasks

Update payment details

Open the billing portal and choose the payment method section. Add the replacement card or payment method, set it as the default if prompted, and save the change before closing the portal.

Change plan

Choose the plan change option in the portal. Review the effective date, price, and any prorated amount before confirming.

After the portal confirms the change, reload Atlas and check whether the account shows the expected plan.

View invoices

Open the invoice or billing history section in the portal. Use the invoice list there for receipts, tax documents, and payment status.

Cancel subscription

Choose Downgrade to Free and review the timing before confirming. Active subscriptions normally remain available until the end of the paid period. If a Stripe renewal payment has failed, Atlas also lets you switch to Free immediately so payment retries stop.

Canceling does not delete your existing research. Free plan limits apply to new sources and AI chats after the downgrade is reconciled.

If Atlas still shows the old plan

Billing updates can take a short time to appear in the app. Refresh Atlas, sign out and back in, and confirm you are viewing the same account that opened the billing portal.

If the portal shows the change but Atlas does not, capture the account email, the action you took, and the portal status before contacting support.

Troubleshooting

Troubleshoot billing and limits

Billing and limit messages usually mean Atlas knows who you are, but the requested action is not currently allowed for the account, plan, quota, or payment state.

Identify the blocked action

Start with the exact action that failed. The fix depends on what Atlas blocked.

Blocked actionLikely area to check
Uploading a fileFile size, source count, processing quota, plan level
Adding a website or videoSource limits, processing availability, unsupported source state
Asking chatAI allowance, attachment size, project/source availability
Generating a mapMap generation quota, source processing state, plan level
Opening billingAccount owner, popup/browser restrictions, billing provider state

Do not repeatedly retry the same expensive action until you understand the limit. Retrying against the same limit can waste time and may consume additional quota if the action partly succeeds.

Check plan and account state

  1. Confirm the email shown in Atlas.
  2. Open account or billing settings.
  3. Check the active plan.
  4. Compare the blocked action with Plans and limits.
  5. Refresh Atlas after any billing change.

If you have more than one Atlas account, make sure the account using the product is the same account that owns the subscription.

For Free accounts, compare the chat meter with the 5 lifetime completed-turn limit. Failed or cancelled requests should not increase that meter. If the meter shows fewer than 5 completed turns but Atlas reports that the Free chat limit was reached, refresh once and send the visible count and error message to support.

Reduce the request

Some limit issues can be resolved without changing plan:

  • Upload a smaller or cleaner PDF.
  • Add fewer files to the same chat message.
  • Ask a narrower question.
  • Generate a map from a smaller source set.
  • Remove unsupported sources from the current task.

Resolve payment or subscription state

Open Manage billing when the issue is payment failure, expired subscription, plan change, invoice access, or cancellation.

After updating billing, return to Atlas, refresh, and retry the blocked action once. If the same message appears, record the exact text instead of continuing to retry.

What to send support

Include the account email, the blocked action, the visible limit or billing message, and whether a billing portal action was just completed. Do not send full payment card details.
